May I suggest looking at distros that provide Long Term Support (LTS) versions? LTS means they intend to support that particular version much farther into the future, so you don't have to upgrade nearly as often. It sounds like you want a version that doesn't require a lot of work on your part, and you might not be as interested in new features added to Linux as you are to new features that will eventually be added to FreeCAD. This gave me a rough estimate about how much support I might be able to seek. One way I looked to help me choose was by looking at the various reddit groups for different distros to see how large/active they were. I got answers from "Ford Ranger" to "Peterbilt". I gather that this is very much like choosing a new truck to buy for hauling my groceries and then asking various people what is best.

At the end of the day, it does not take very long (and I am an absolute novice) to download Rufus, and then use it to prep a few different Linux distros and put them on a thumb drive to then try them out to find one that worked with my hardware. That being said I am a big fan of going with whatever product has good community support and tried hard to get some flavor of Ubuntu to work for me for that reason. Majaro was mentioned in an old thread as a working distro for this particular issue with this particular hardware.
For me I ended up with Majaro on an old chromebook because I tried a half dozen other distros and had sound issues with all of them. Looks like folks have given you some great advice below. I downloaded FreeCAD-0.20 from into ~/.local/bin.Įxecuted: $ chmod +x ~/.local/bin/FreeCAD-0.20.0-Linux-x86_64.AppImage I also tried refreshing gnome-shell by pressing Alt+F2followed by pressing r and Enter but this action did not help either. Neither does FreeCad icon appears when I pressed the Super key and typed Freecad in search bar. When I press Super+A keys, I can't see the FreeCAD icon there. Then I included the answer by but it did not work too.
